What is urban exploration?
Urban exploration is a broad term. It is best known as visiting and exploring abandoned buildings, houses, factories etc.
There is not a specific purpose behind urban exploration. Some people do it because of the thrill, some do it for the photography and others do it because they like old building and find them really interesting, but I think that for most urban explorers it's a mix of those 3 reasons. Just entering a building is often very exciting and risky, because you are on private property and you usually do not have the permission to enter the premises.
Rules within the urban exploration community.
Even though you are already breaking the law and breaking into buildings, there are still rules within the urban exploration community. The biggest and most important rule is "Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints." So nothing gets stolen and you leave nothing behind. Locations also aren't easily given away. The reason for this is to prevent vandalism and theft. Not everyone who visit these locations are there to explore and take pictures. A lot of locations are in a fairly good condition and it would be a shame if anything gets destroyed or plastered with graffiti. It's common that furniture and valuable things gets moved or just magically dissapears. This isn't only a shame for these locations but it gives urban explorers a bad reputation. At a lot known locations neighbors will keep an eye on the buildings. It is possible that they send you away, which doesn't always happen in a nice way or they'll call the police, because they are afraid that the location gets trashed or stuff gets stolen.
Often urban exploration is illegal, as trespassing is usually necessary. However urban explorers do not intend to vandalize the property.
